The State Government of Western Australia is inviting feedback on the Strata Titles Act 1985 as part of its ongoing five-year legislative review. This is a prime opportunity for anyone interested in improving WA’s strata laws to contribute their insights and suggestions.

Phase One: Open for Public Input

The initial phase of public consultation is now live and will continue until 31 October. (Updated 30/10/24): SCA (WA) has provided a copy of our draft submission for members to utilise or adapt here. This phase is crucial for gathering input from strata owners, residents, and industry professionals. Key areas of focus include:

  • Strata Manager Practices and Standards: Assessing current practices and identifying potential improvements.

  • Cost Controls in Strata Schemes: Finding ways to better manage and reduce costs within strata communities.

  • Enhancing Strata Living: Seeking opportunities to make strata living more equitable and enjoyable for all.

These efforts build on the comprehensive legislative changes introduced in 2020, aimed at making strata ownership and management more transparent and fair.

The Role of Strata in WA

Western Australia boasts nearly 340,000 strata properties, housing about a quarter of the state’s population. Strata titles encompass a variety of property types, including:

  • Residential properties like apartments, townhouses, and units

  • Retail, commercial, and industrial premises

  • Increasingly, mixed-use developments

Looking Ahead: Phase Two

A second phase of consultation is scheduled for early 2025, offering another chance for stakeholders to influence the future of strata laws.
